Perfect binding is how most softcover books are made: the pages are gathered into a block, the spine edge is trimmed and glued, and a wrap-around cover is attached to create a flat, printable spine. It's the format to choose when a booklet is thick enough that staples won't hold it, or when you want a title on the spine so it reads properly on a shelf.

WHAT IT'S USED FOR

  • Product catalogs and thick reference guides
  • Annual reports and corporate overviews
  • Self-published books, novels and memoirs
  • Course books, manuals and training material
  • Programme books and commemorative editions

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Page count: Starts around 28 to 30 pages — below that there isn't enough bulk to form a spine. Higher page counts are where perfect binding earns its place.
  • Printable spine: The flat glued spine can carry a title, author or volume number, which saddle stitch can't do.
  • Sizes: 8.5 x 11 for catalogs and reports; 6 x 9 for books and novels. Other sizes available.
  • Interior paper: 100lb gloss text for image-heavy work; lighter uncoated stock for text-heavy books where readability matters more than gloss.
  • Cover: Heavier cover stock wraps the spine and both faces.
  • Flat lay: Doesn't lay flat. The glued spine holds the block together, so the book will want to close. If pages need to stay open while someone works from them, wire-o or coil is the better choice.

FAQ

How many pages do I need for perfect binding?
Around 28 to 30 pages at minimum. Below that the page block is too thin to form a spine that holds glue properly, and saddle stitch is both cheaper and more practical.

Can I print on the spine?
Yes — that's the main reason to choose perfect binding. The spine is flat and printable, so the book is identifiable on a shelf. Spine width depends on page count and paper weight; we'll confirm it before printing.

Does a perfect bound book lay flat?
No. The glued spine keeps the block together and the book will close on its own. For anything meant to stay open on a desk — manuals, workbooks, recipe books — choose wire-o or coil.

Is perfect binding more expensive than saddle stitch?
Per copy, yes — there's more material and more labour in the binding. But above 64 pages saddle stitch isn’t an option, so perfect binding becomes the practical choice rather than the premium one.

What paper should I use for the inside pages?
Coated gloss for catalogs and anything photography-led. Uncoated for books with a lot of reading — it's easier on the eye and doesn't reflect light back at the reader.
